Endo-sugery- Professional Oral Surgeon in Potomac. Apicoectomy or root recession theraphy

apicoectome- root recession surgery at our dental center in North Bethesda

The procedure of removing the root tip or apex portion along with other infected tissue is called an apicoectomy. A dentist at our Potomac dental office may perform this procedure after a root canal procedure.

It is possible to experience continuing inflammation and infection in the root tip area of the tooth following a root canal procedure. Signs of infection include:

-Discomfort

-Swelling in the area of the tooth

-Tooth sensitivity

Before the apicoectomy procedure, the tissue around the affected tooth is numbed with a local anesthetic. The gum surrounding the affected tooth is next carefully moved aside to expose the root. The apex or very tip of the root is then carefully extracted and the area is filled and sealed. The gum is replaced and a couple of sutures may be necessary to hold the gum stable during recovery. A pain relieving medication may be prescribed if the patient is feeling any lingering discomfort and an antibiotic may also be taken to treat infection. Complete recovery from the apicoectomy typically takes three months.
